Overview of Independent Medical Education Grants

Independent Medical Education Grants

An independent medical education (IME) grant is financial support provided to a healthcare or healthcare-related institution or organization to fund independent, objective, unbiased, balanced, and scientifically rigorous accredited medical education activities in which the grant recipient is responsible for developing the content and managing the educational event.

For continuing medical education grants (CME), the CME provider must maintain control over the educational methods, material, and venue for the CME program.

Funding Eligibility

Education providers must be accredited to provide healthcare provider continuing education (e.g., CME, CPE) by a national accrediting body such as the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Accredited Medical Education

IME grant requests for an ACCME-accredited program aimed at healthcare professionals must be submitted by the organization accrediting the activity (the accredited provider) regardless of the dollar amount requested.

Grant requests for other accredited programs (i.e., pharmacy, nursing) must be submitted by the organization that is responsible for development of the program's content.

How to Apply for IME

Submission Process

Applications must be submitted through this website at least 90 calendar days prior to the start of the proposed activity and must include all of the following:

  • Online submission form
  • Letter of request on sponsor letterhead
  • Gap analysis/needs assessment
  • Activity design/agenda which includes learning objectives
  • Description of evaluation and/or outcomes assessment
  • Detailed line-item budget
  • Form W-9 or tax-exempt letter
  • Accreditation certificate
  • Description of the proposed educational program, including subject matter, timing, location, proposed audience, and expected number of attendees

Grant Application Evaluation

Grant applications will be reviewed in consideration of the following criteria:

  • The activity is within the education areas of interest of the IME Grants program
  • Does not include a request for support for entertainment or recreational activities
  • Contains a detailed, line-item budget
  • The requested support is reasonable and justified based on a fair market value analysis
  • The educational program takes place at a venue that is conducive to an educational exchange among the attendees
  • The request has a clearly defined agenda that is consistent with its stated objectives
  • The request is received at least 90 calendar days prior to the activity start date
  • The grant applicant is not on the Indivior Prohibited Grant Applicant List
  • The grant applicant has submitted reconciliation documentation for grants previously funded by Indivior, if any
  • The grant applicant has returned unused funds to Indivior for a previously supported grant (if applicable)
  • Indivior will not be the sole provider of financial support. That is, the applicant must have at least one provider of financial support for the activity other than Indivior, and the applicant must provide the details of that support
  • If it is not possible for an additional funder to participate, prior review and approval must be obtained from Indivior prior to review of the grant application

Examples of requests that will not be considered include, but are not limited to, those that:

  • Promote off-label use of any Indivior product
  • Are relevant to the treatment of pain with any Indivior product
  • Are relevant to the development of clinical practice guidelines
  • Support a religious purpose
  • Promote any Indivior product or are intended to influence formulary decisions
  • Seek support for an activity that has already occurred

Examples of unacceptable budget line items include, but are not limited to:

  • Equipment, salaries, benefits, journal subscriptions, gifts/prizes, meals, and childcare
